The ramblings of Katie Hjertaas

Sorry to all of you who have been patiently waiting for a blog update. I am the worst at blog maintenance, but I haven’t had that much to write about.

But now I have very exciting news to share. After six excruciating weeks of waiting, I finally have a new placement!

Next week I will start my new job at AYISE (Active Youth Initiative for Social Enhancement) where I will be working on a brand new project that focuses on enhancing sanitation practices in peri-urban areas.

The project has three components. The first is to implement a recycling and composting program in the community. The second component is to set up plots to demonstrate the benefits of using compost on crops and gardens. The third phase of the project is to involve local schools and promote urban agriculture by setting up garden plots at schools.

Pretty cool stuff. The project doesn’t actually start until the first week of December and I already have a feeling that I will be very, very busy. The most exciting aspect for me is that I am going to be able to pick and choose what areas I am most interested in and where I feel I can contribute the most. As well, I am going to get to work primarily alongside young people who are passionate about making a difference to their community.

There is one foreseeable downfall of this new placement. The job is in Blantyre. Four hours south of Lilongwe. I am a bit sad about leaving my friends and the comfort of a city I know, but I am sure in a week or two I will be saying “Lilong-what?” I went for a quick visit last week to check out the placement and life in Blantyre and I think the move is going to be a very good thing.

A couple of weeks ago, I spent the weekend climbing Mount Mulanje (well, half of it) with six wonderful ladies. It was an amazing experience and despite the very sore muscles afterwards, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Update. 17/10/2011

Many people have asked me about this blog, I guess it is time to send out an update on life here in Malawi.

I will start with my work placement, as this is the biggest update in my life right now. I am currently working for the Association for Smallholder Seed Multiplication Action Group (ASSMAG). ASSMAG was developed ten years ago by the government as a response to a food crisis in Malawi. Essentially, it was meant to connect maize producers with a market, ASSMAG facilitated the multiplication of high quality seed that was then sold to the government and distributed to the population. Fast forward ten years, ASSMAG is on the brink of financial collapse. The organization was not created to function over the long-term as a business and as a result has no funding and very little morale. When I arrived, I was told that I would be responsible for creating and implementing a marketing strategy; in reality I have spent the last month staring out the window. My employers have nothing for me to do and spend very little time in the office.

My professors would probably say that working for an organization that is constantly on the edge of collapse is “a real development experience” but at the same time it is also my education; I have spent the past three years in school and thousands of dollars to get here. Last week I approached WUSC about moving to a new placement organization which they are in the process of finding; by the end of this week, I should know more. Part of me feels like a failure, but I am constantly reminding myself of why I am here and that things will work out in the end.

Otherwise, things are going well. I have spent the last couple weeks getting to know Lilongwe; it isn’t a very big city but it is vibrant. Unfortunately, the country is going through (another) fuel shortage- the only place to buy fuel is on the black market. I really like walking, so it is easy for me to get around during the day. However, after dark it is almost impossible to get around as taxis are scarce and are now able to charge two or three times the rate they would have charged two weeks ago.

In other news- I think we are going to head to Zambia on safari in a few weeks before the rainy season starts. Malawi has several game parks but I am told if you want to see big game you have to cross the border. Pretty soon it will be time to start planning my Christmas vacation- I thought I would only have a couple days off but it turns out offices usually shut down for 2-3 weeks at Christmas so I will have some time to travel. If anyone has any suggestions for a holiday destination in South-Eastern Africa- let me know!

A message from Malawi. 16/09/2011

Greetings from Malawi! After three years of anticipation, I have finally arrived at my destination and I am excited to start this new chapter in my life.

After five planes and many hours of traveling, we arrived in Lilongwe very early on Friday morning and at this point all we wanted was to fall into bed for much needed sleep. However, WUSC misread our arrival time as 1:30 pm on Friday, rather than 1:30 am. We ended up spending the night at the WUSC country director’s home because the hotel wasn’t expecting us yet and didn’t have room for us. We certainly started off with a bang.

We have spent the last week getting to know how things are done in Malawi. Lilongwe isn’t a very large city but it is very spread out so there has been a lot of ground to cover; Malawians are the most helpful people so finding our way around has not been a problem. I have started to tackle the mini-bus system  (the most efficient and enjoyable way to get around the city). Minibuses are unregulated, private 15 seater vans that have no schedule- you just jump on the one that is going to your area in the city. I say they are 15 seater vans but today I was in a minibus with 24 other people- I am learning that personal space isn’t something you think about here.

So, things are good thus far. There is a lot to see and do, the people are amazing and friendly and it isn’t too hot (yet). Next week I have my first full week of work (more about that later) and it will be nice to settle into some sort of routine. Tomorrow we are heading up to Lake Malawi for the first time  with another WUSC volunteer; I am very excited to finally be able to see it.

That is all for now; I am going to try and update as much as possible (which should be easy as I broke down and bought an internet stick today) so stay tuned!

Katie

Hello faithful readers,

I know you are all probably not going to be able to sleep tonight in anticipation for my next Malawi Monday- however I have bad news. The last week of school (ever) is really kicking my ass so I am not blogging for a week or so until life calms down again.

Today I made an amazing discovery. I was bored and Googling Malawi related things when I stumbled upon this. Check it out, you will not be disappointed.

These amazing photos were taken by Rebecca Jacobson; she lived in Malawi for year.

What an unbelievably beautiful country; I am so excited to have the opportunity to get to know it.

ALSO- if you are kicking around Waterloo this weekend and looking for something to do..the INDEVOURS FILM FESTIVAL is taking place Saturday and Sunday at the Princess Twin Cinema. Check out their website for showtimes. There will be lots of  games for kids and you can wear your pajamas!

Today in my head:

- The role of women in peasant led agrarian reform movements in the global South

- State-led agroecological initiatives in Cuba

- My hypothetical student run used clothing cooperative

- Only 2.5 weeks of class in my undergrad career!

-  Why am I sitting here? I should be outside enjoying the weather.

All-time favorite summer jam.
